What Would Happen If Your BT Router Had No Hostname?

Routers handle connections between multiple networks and subnets, or between a network and the Internet. Each router has an Internet Protocol address – a sequence of numbers based on binary code – that allows computers that send data to the router to locate it. Routers also have a host name, such as “myrouter” or “susansrouter” so that human users can identify and configure them without having to memorize a sequence of numbers.

Default Name

Even if you don’t name your router, it still has one. Each unit comes standard with a default name, such as BT Router Login, and hackers know the default names and passwords for all major brands. If you don’t change the router’s default settings, it’s easy for someone to access your system and use your connection.

Nameless

If your router did not have the host name, not even the original default name, you would have to enter your IP address to make changes to the router’s configuration. If there is no host name and no IP address, the router cannot connect to anything, as there is no way to address messages that go to the router. An error reconfiguring a router could erase its IP address or local address on the network.

Configuration

The instruction manual for your router includes installation instructions, including how to replace the manufacturer’s default host name and password with one you create yourself. A host name can consist of any combination of uppercase & lowercase letters and numbers, but without spaces. It may include a period only separates the host name of your domain name, such as “myrouter.mydomain.com.” To change it, you can use a command such as “hostname”, which applies to Cisco routers such as BT Sport Routers. If you are unable to change the hostname, then there must be some issue with the router, which you are unaware of. Take the help of experts to find out the problem befalling the router.

Considerations

The host name is case sensitive, so make sure to enter the details carefully. If you enter a letter in the wrong case while reconfiguring the router later, it will refuse your commands. The name must differ from the names you assign to any other routers, computers, or other equipment on your network. While the name should not be too long or use difficult to remember spellings, it is safer to avoid words in common use or that also function as domain names.

If you still aren’t able to get the hostname for you BT Router, then the right thing for you to do is get in touch with experts to find out the hostname and get on with what you intended to after finding the hostname.
